Duke, his lady friend Daisy and their 8 puppies were rescued from a neglectful situation. He is a sweet dog and seems good with the other dog he was rescued with.
Here is what Duke's foster family has to say about him:
• Appearance Duke is black with white paws and belly and part of his head. He is unanimously described as handsome/cute by people he meets! He is very thin, but quite strong for his 50-pound frame. His coat is shiny and soft. He has filled in a bit since being fostered.
• Energy Level Duke has a moderate energy level. He loves to go outside (he knows what the word "walk" means). At the dog park, he trots and runs around for a while, chasing tennis balls and generally enjoying himself. He gets at least two 15-minutes walks a day, and sometimes a third or fourth shorter one. He has gone on a few runs with me, but he isn't very disciplined on a run, so it doesn't work well, but he does enjoy long walks. He usually winds down around 10 or 11 at night, and puts himself to bed, and wakes up around 5 or 5:30.
• Food We feed him a cup of dry food and a large spoonful of wet food, twice a day. He gets a pretty generous supply of treats throughout the day, and sometimes a 1/3-1/2 cup of dry food around lunchtime. He is always eager to eat! He goes through his food in under thirty seconds.
• Adaptability Duke takes a while to adjust to new situations, but he does okay. He is excited to explore new bike paths, dog parks, etc.
• Behaviors Duke is wonderful in the house and around people of all ages. He drools when we fix his meals, so we put an old rug next to the kitchen where we make him sit and wait. His worst behavior is his on-leash manners. He was terrible; now he is passable. In our familiar neighborhood, he is usually fine; he comes when called and sits on command, unless a squirrel or armadillo gets his attention. In new areas, he is excitable and hard to keep under control. Duke takes patience and discipline to walk well, but we have seen lots of improvement.
• Human Social Skills Duke is very friendly with adults, and a bit cautious around children. We have had kids visit us, as little as 20 months, and he is fine with them after a little while, and tolerates them very well. Our 10-year-old niece and 13-year-old nephew love him (and vice versa). He played very adorably with a 22-month-old little girl.
• Animal Social Skills Duke lets dogs greet him, but he generally would rather be left alone. He has only shown aggression when other dogs initiate it. At the dog park, he is fine, though we keep an eye on him, and he usually ignores the other dogs.
• Obedience Duke is very well-behaved. He knows sit, down, stay, and shake. He learned quickly where he was not allowed in the house, and has developed a knack for intuiting our intonations on a walk.
• Training Duke is crate- and house-trained. We no longer put him in his crate, although he likes to sleep/nap in there on his own accord. We leave him in the house we were are not home or sleeping, and he is fine. He isn't great learning tricks, but does them very well once learned.
• Personality Quirks Duke is a wonderful dog. Everyone who has come in contact with him loves him. He is well-behaved, adorable, and affectionate. He is great with people, usually playful, and eager to be around his people.
• Ideal Home Duke would do well in a home that can give him lots of attention and a fair bit of exercise. (We are able to work from all but maybe two days a week.) A family with kids aged 8-15 would probably be perfect for him. Veteran dog owners are probably best, though no other dogs currently in the house would be preferred.
The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. They are highly protective of their owners and the owner's property. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Used as all around working farm dogs, they were referred to as "the poor mans horse". They are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years.
