Description:

Michael is a huge dose of messy, imperfect love in one tiny puppy package.  Invite him into your life and you’re inviting laughter and muddy footprints, noise and chaos, goofiness and sheer and utter devotion.  This guy is very silly and clumsy, he makes me laugh the way he stumbles over everything.  He’s always in a hurry, and he’s always going somewhere or up to something.  He will untie your shoes if you stand still, and if he can’t get your shoes, he will cry like a tired toddler at Disney.  He is that earnest about everything.  He wants to be picked up; he wants to be put down, and oh, my, how he loves people.  If he can reach your face, he will lick it.  I know he will be very attached.  I take him on little walks without a leash because he is so good at sticking right by my heel.  He always drops whatever he is doing when I call him.  I didn’t teach him that with treats, either.  It’s just clear that people are most important to him.  He loves nothing more than head scratches and belly rubs.  Oh, and he also loves his siblings, too.  We put a bed in his pen, and he and his sister would curl up in there together.  Before long, they didn’t fit, so we put a second bed.  His sister would push him out or leave him to go sleep alone in the other bed.  But Michael valued closeness over comfort, and until we got them a bigger bed, he slept in front of the bed with one limb stretched out to touch his sister. He is definitely a lover.

Whoever adopts Michael won’t have an easy time.  He cries a lot and wants you constantly, he rolls around in messes, and he had such a hard time learning to poop outside that we joked that he was crying to go back in the pen and poo.  But he will repay you a thousand times over.  He is full of passion about everything, and so silly you will have a hard time not hugging him even when he misbehaves, but most of all he is just so ready to devote himself to someone.  He will hang on your every word, follow you around, and make you feel like the most important person ever.  Give him a chance, and he will rock your world!

PS:  he did finally learn that poo goes outside.  Now we get about a twenty second warning where he circles the pen and whines before he eliminates.  When one of us sees this, we sound the alarm, “poop alert!” and someone will grab him and hurry outside so he can do his business.  That’s pretty typical Michael, a little extra trouble, but you’re laughing so hard, you don’t really mind.

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
