Description:
Arlo is a gorgeous Plott Hound. I love this breed. Their brindle coat is spectacular! And that is exactly what this boy is!!! Arlo is wonderful with people and dogs, but not so much cats. I guess too much of a hound instinct . But, if your home is feline-free and want your yard squirrel-free, Arlo is a great choice for you!  Make sure you read all the updates on this page.  It is fascinating to read how his personality has unfolded.  Who would guess that this dog is actually a very submissive, intelligent, well-trained dog!

Volunteer Update 11/8: I spent all day sat. with Arlo at the Lake Mary Petsmart! What a well behaved sweet dog! He was nothing but wonderful to all the other dogs he interacted with! He loved up every person whom walked by and tried to push his body so close to the side of the crate for pets at one point he actually moved the crate! He has dreamy eyes and a loving heart! Anyone would be lucky to have him in his home! He is quite stong so i would suggest a home with someone who can handle this big boy! He does well on a leash as long as you teach him not to pull. It took me about 30 seconds of training for him to stop pulling me around! He is a smart boy!

Foster Update 5/22:  I have had Arlo for only a couple days and can't for the life of me figure out why he hasn't been adopted yet.  He is such a loyal, well-behaved dog.  He is out of the puppy stage and yet has all the energy in the world if you're willing to play fetch with him.  The ball toy I gave him is his favorite!  I also gave him a bone but he seems disinterested in chewing... a good sign that my furniture or other belongings (like shoes!) are completely safe.  He knows how to sit, lay down, and roll over!  I also taught him how to shake (give paw) and he does all his tricks without it having to be repeated.  When I first saw him at the shelter my thought was probably the same as everyone else... he's big!  But now that he's home with me, he doesn't seem as big as he looks... he's just a big cuddler!  When I walk him he doesn't have any interest at all in trying to overpower me, so he's great on the leash.  And when I pet him, he rolled right over on to his back... a very submissive thing for dogs to do, showing just what a loyal guy he is.

Foster Update 5/27:  Arlo is a big sweetie and also very protective of me and my home.  He's been a little leary of strangers, warming to some but not others.  I'm not sure if it's because he's been in the shelter for so long or just instinct (probably both) but I'm training him to learn what behaviors are okay and which are not.  The best part is that he's very smart and naturally submissive, obeying commands very well.

Foster Update 6/5:  Arlo has come a long way in the couple weeks I've had him.  I began working with Paul Pipitone, the experienced trainer who donates time to the shelter.  I learned how to walk Arlo properly (in the heel position) and he responded to it immediately.  Since then I've been able to establish much better leadership with him. Arlo is naturally submissive but he is a strong dog and does need someone who is a strong leader, maybe even has some experience with training.  The only drawback to Arlo that I can find is that he's lacked consistency, which is not his fault.  I counted that he's been moved back and forth between the shelter and various homes about 10 times.  It wasn't until just a few days ago that he started to feel relaxed enough to start chewing (on a bone).  He NEVER gets into anything in my home.  Once, the garbage, but he hasn't since I told him "no".  He is still learning how to behave when I have visitors but I think with time and consistency, he will overcome his fears.  I've been socializing him with Paul's dogs as well as other dogs and he gets along great with them - he is not dog aggressive at all.  Pretty soon I'll be introducing him to the pool so he can learn to swim, as swimming is great exercise for dogs.  He loves my attention, loves car rides, loves to go on walks, and if walked properly, does not chase the squirrels!  He does all his tricks effortlessly and now I'm teaching him how to "give kisses"... just for fun!!!

Foster Update 6/12: Today Arlo and I went to the pool and he got in for the first time! He didn't really like it but I didn't expect him to right away. He seemed happy enough just standing on the stairs with his legs in. He then walked around the edge as I swam around the outside, much preferring to play with me than be leashed to the fence nearby. He's such a great companion, I wish his size made it easier for me to take him everywhere with me, because I would! One thing I keep forgetting to mention about him is actually my favorite thing -- he NEVER begs for food. Never, not once. He barely even looks at it! He eats his own food, at a patient pace, and has never shown any signs of food aggression whatsoever. I think Arlo would be great in a home with another dog as he seems to enjoy playtime with people or other dogs more than he does with toys, so try I give him as much attention as possible. I know he'd also be great with kids, because I try to play rough and he just rolls over on his back... he's just a big snugglebug, really. Anyone would be lucky to have this one.

Foster Update 6/21: I have Arlo trained to a T. If there weren't a leash law I could probably walk him without one and he'd walk right where he's supposed to - right on my left, one step behind me. He goes potty on command, where I tell him to, with just a simple "go potty!" and is extremely housebroken. He's crate trained, but I still have to give him treats to go in. He doesn't mind it in there, I think he's just sad when I leave. :( He's wonderful now with my visitors, I've trained him out of his fears. Now when anyone comes over, he'll bark to alert me and immediately stops when I say "quiet". Once I give him permission he'll go up to them, sniff, and welcome them. It's a complete 180 from when he first got here, but it just took a lot of love and patience (and training!).

Foster Update 7/13:  A friend and I took Arlo with us to the beach this past weekend and boy did he love the house we stayed at!  With a larger back yard, we couldn't stop laughing at how Arlo went airborne in his joy to leap around the yard.  Just leap after leap!  He is happy with the simplest things and just being loved.  He is so well-behaved that it's hard for me to discipline him when he does need it.  I think Arlo's perfect home would be somewhere he can be regularly socialized.  He did not receive proper socialization as a puppy and that is the reason he is scared when strangers come over.  He has gotten much better, but I can still sense that he is fearful and reluctant.  If I had to pick the ideal home for Arlo, it would be with a social family (if kids, probably older than 8 just because he is large) and at least one other dog since he loves having a playmate.  I can't say enough great things about him!

Foster Update 8/30:  Arlo's fears of new people have dwindled to a bare minimum.  Although he still waits for my approval on people coming through the door (which is preferable for protection), he is eager to smell and get to know my visitors.  After a few treats he's usually ready to be pet and loved on, which is what every dog ultimately wants!  He greets women much quicker and more eagerly than men but again, treats really do the trick.  A friend of mine is somewhat of a whistler and I noticed that Arlo was very interested in the noise and going to him whenever he whistled, as though it's his learned "come" command.  There is nothing about Arlo I don't love, he's the best dog I've ever cared for!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Plott Hound is a medium-sized, muscular dog that is soundly put-together. The short, glossy, dense coat usually comes in brindle but also comes in slate blue and buckskin; many with black saddles. It has a long, high-held tail when the dog is alert. The large, long ears are characteristic of the breed. The thigh muscles are lean and powerful giving it lots of energy. The strong feet have webbed toes. The Plott Hound is the only American hound without British ancestry. The breed's designated name honors its American founders and family tree. Seven generations of the Jonathan Plott family, beginning in the 1750's, bred their dogs exclusively within the family. A mix of bloodhounds and curs reportedly comprised the original stock. The dog's working claim to fame is coldtrailing bear and raccoons in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Great Smoky Mountains of the Eastern United States. The Plott Hound is American through and through. The Plotts family have only rarely put these dogs on the market; so while the breed was officially recognized in 1946, it is still rare outside the southern states. Its is most efficient in the search for coyotes, wolves, and wildcats. They are extremely hardy and have superior hunting instincts. The breed has been carefully developed to be stronger and more persistent. They can make a good family companion but are seldom kept as one. Most people get these dogs for the hunt.
The breed's "all-in-the-family" background makes it a fine companion. Loyal and intelligent, the Plott Hound is quick to learn and quick to love and is good with children. Their personable natures are surely not evident on the trail. This large game hunter and scenthound has great courage. Determined, courageous and proud, it will play chicken with a 500-pound papa bear or a ticked off boar. The Plott has a curiously sharp and high-pitched voice, unlike the deep-throated howl common to other coonhounds. Socialize this breed at an early age and be sure to teach it simple obedience like walking on a leash. This breed tends to drool and slobber.
The Plott Hound is considered the hardiest of the coonhounds. This breed has no road sense at all and should be kept in a safe area becase they have a tendency to wander. They have a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
