Description: Bastian came to us from a kill shelter, who found him as a stray. They know we can't resist the big, senior dogs. Poor Bastian just seemed so sad, even after we'd bathed and groomed him, and showed him lots of love. But a visit to the vet revealed some serious dental problems, and most people are miserable when they're sick: dogs are no different. Now that we've treated that, we have a big, happy dog on our hands! Before, when you walked by him or talked to him, he just followed you with his eyes. Now he'll perk up and wag his tail when you show him attention. He gets along with other dogs. Playtime is his second favourite time of the day. His most favourite, of course, is mealtime!
**The Newfoundland is a working dog. They were bred to assist the fishermen on the island of Newfoundland, which is part of Canada. It is large boned and muscular, with a thick, oily, water reistant double coat, all of which help it when it's working the frigid, rough North Atlantic. They have many traits in common with other large working dogs, including the St. Bernard and the Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Calm, docile, and tremendously loyal, these dogs are great with other animals and children--although because of its size, small children may find themselves accidentally knocked over. Newfoundland dogs have a special talent for water rescue, and many Newfoundland clubs in North America and the United Kingdom offer classes and demonstrations. Supposedly, a Newfoundland survived the sinking of the Titanic, and survived for 3 hours in the icy waters, swimming along next to a lifeboat. Purebreed "Newfies," like many large breeds, often have problems with joint dyplasia. They have a life expectency of 8-10 years.
