Foster Home Update

Gavin is in a wonderful foster home, just waiting for a great active family to swoop him up. Their update will give you some wonderful insights on what a great addition he will be to an active family!

Gavin does great in his crate when we have to leave but he has so much energy that too much time cooped up can make him crazy by the end of the day. However, he craves constant attention. Not in a bad way, but when he wants attention, he will let you know! He will crawl right into your lap! We are working with him on down and he understands but if you don't give him the attention he will lay at your feet and cry. He loves to be around people and is the type of dog to follow you from room to room not just lay by himself.

He is great with other dogs and has no aggression at all and is actually very submissive to other dogs. We have taken him to the dog park and he does well with all kinds of breeds. And he loves to play and will encourage even our lazy dog to play. (The only vizsla in the world who would rather sleep than run!) That being said, when he is trying to get her to play, he can be a barker. He has a funny kind of loud seal like bark.  He will bark if someone comes to the door but is easily quieted. He is a large dog and likes to rough house when he plays. We have a bigger dog so the two of them can wrestle well together. He is fine around little dogs but I'm not sure if they will be able to keep up with his playing. He is not a digger but a chewer! Does not chew household items but any toys are destroyed in minutes.

Gavin is very trainable! We have worked with him on a leash with a gentle leader and he has done fabulous! He also learned to sit at the door before going outside and not just running out and he's getting better with "come". I would just want any family to understand how much energy he has! We run him on a bike 2-3 times a day and he can still play around the house. I'm sure as he get older he will calm but right now it is amazing the amount of energy he has. He just constantly needs to move. But he is such a love and wants to give and receive that more than anything!

Early background:
Gavin came from a kill shelter, where his time was soon up. He is loves to give kisses! We think he would be a great dog for an active household.

Volunteer Update 02/14:
Gavin is one of my personal favorites! He loves to play and loves attention! He is a very active boy and will keep his owner moving, but I imagine will make a very fun pet. He just wants attention more than anything! He is a jumper and would love a tall fenced in yard. He is just a love and has captured the hearts of many of the PRBJ staff and volunteers!

Foster Update 11/14:
Leash Manners - Walks well on leash when walked by himself.

Crate/House Training - House trained - no accidents, Gavin is crate trained and is fed in his crate.

Socialization – He enjoys running in the yard with my dog.  He enjoys tossing toys around and being near my dog inside. He is friendly with people and loves being petted. He will let you know if you haven't petted him enough.

Energy Level and Exercise – Moderate/ high energy – enjoys the freedom of the yard and motivates my dogs to chase and play with him. He plays outside several times throughout the day. He enjoys toys but will need some "heavy duty toys" and playing with his foster sister.  He is calm/alert inside.

Daily Structure and Schedule –  get up 6:30 -7 out in yard for 30 minutes. Eat breakfast in kennel. 30 minutes of quiet time after breakfast. Let them back out in to yard or den with me. 8:30 back in Kennel while I get ready for work (Workdays). some workdays he gets to go to work with me, other days he has to stay home. Dinner time is around 6:30 or 7. After dinner 30 more minutes of quiet time and then he is free to roam the house, play with his sister, or sit with me. Bed time is 10- 10:30 which we go out one last time before bed. He sleeps in his kennel at night

Confidence Level – Friendly and confident with people. He is great with my dog and has made a few friends at work.   Enjoys car rides.

Obedience Training – He has learned/knows "sit","come" "House" and "no" He makes good eye contact and seems to want to please, so he should be easy to train.

Personality Quirks – Gavin likes to jump on people. We are working on it. He will also need heavy duty toys. Still very puppyish and loves to give kisses

Ideal Home -  Would love an active home with a single person, a couple or a family.  He would enjoy a fenced yard and someone who would enjoy walking and playing with him.  He  enjoys my dog and would probably be best in a two dog house.  He is playful and gentle and will bond quickly to a caring person who has time for him.  He will make a loyal companion or a great family pet

General Information about Hound Dogs

All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.

Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
