Jericho returned to us after seven years of love. His owner told us they just had too much going on to take care of him, and thus gave him back to us. He's a good dog who loves to play with his family and occasionally other dogs in a dog park. He's well-mannered and very sweet!

Jericho, his friend Justine, and her babies Jem and Joni were found in the backyard of a house that the Orlando Police raided. They were friendly but seriously malnourished and full of worms. Luckily for this little family, one of our special officers was on the scene. He called Judy and drove right up to our shelter.
Jericho is very energetic. He is stubborn and wants to do what he wants to do--but he's not mean or aggressive about it. For instance, if he doesn't want to go in his crate he will just plunk down on the floor and not move. And somehow, when he does that, he seems to gain another 30 pounds because you just can
not
move him. We think he will be a great dog once he learns some manners.
Foster Update 1/24/14:
Energy Level - playful, enjoys walks, chasing a ball and laying near someone when he’s tired
• Food - eats 1 cup of Taste of the Wild dog food twice a day and several treats. He loves food and gets very excited at meal times – he takes treats gently and can catch them
• Adaptability - seems fairly confident and quickly adjusted to our home and other dogs
• Behaviors - still a puppy so he’ll toss his toys around and then chew them. He has not chewed furniture but occasionally picks up shoes and carries them around. He destroyed one slipper. We have a sand box and he enjoys digging there. He likes to chew on a soup bone. He is not “nippy” with people.
• Human Social Skills - loves people and was comfortable with our family the first day. He greets visitors playfully at the door.
• Animal Social Skills – enjoys playing chase with our dogs and puppy wrestles with our 2 year old dog. He has never started a confrontation with another dog but when a dog was growly with him, he was growly back. They did not fight but Jerico did not back down. After the incident, Jerico seemed frightened and stayed away from the other dog and next to me.
• Obedience – knows Sit, Paw, Off, Wait (at the door) and catches treats. He walks well on a leash with a training collar. He starts off excited but settles down after a block or two. We walk him 1 mile during the week and 2 or 3 miles on the weekends.
• Training - house broken and crate trained. I rarely crate him because he sleeps well throughs the night, gets along well with our dogs and does not destroy things in our home. He quickly learned not to “counter surf” and not to get on the bed. He seems to want to please and he enjoys being a “lap dog”. He puts his paws on my husband’s knees and eases his way up while looking at him with pleading eyes. He waits to be invited and then quickly jumps in his lap. He really wants attention and to be loved.
• Personality Quirks - We have never heard him bark. He sometimes does a low bark but it’s clear he was trained not to bark. He is not a guard dog – walks right up to visitors to be petted.
• Ideal Home - Jerico would enjoy a home with lots of friendly people or with a person that wants a loving companion. He seems to prefer people over dogs but does enjoy playing with other dogs and would enjoy having a home with another friendly dog He would enjoy a fenced yard to play in and would enjoy someone who would throw him a ball or toss him a toy to chase. He sometimes brings them back and seems like he could easily be trained to be a good retriever. Our dogs distract him. He enjoys walks and daily walks would help him bond quickly.
Like many dogs in the South, Jericho is heartworm positive but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating him with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.
All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.
