Description:

Violet was rescued from a high kill shelter. This interesting Kai Ken mix had a front broken leg. She has since all healed up and is looking for her forever home. Violet is definitely a high energy dog and is dominant with other dogs. She does have a high prey drive and I would not recommend her in a home with small animals like rabits, cats or ferrets. She would love an owner whom would take her running or playing fetch.

Medical Info:  Violet is not able to drink normally from a water bowl, as she begins to choke and spits the water back up.  We are looking into why this occurs but in the meantime, Violet has learned to drink water from a hampster bottle with better success.  She does not have any trouble with eating food from a bowl.  Violet also occasionally walks with a limp from where the compound fracture was in her front left paw.  She limps mostly when first waking up after a nap or after playing and running for an extended amount of time.

This is a very interesting breed please see below about their personality. When she first came into rescue we really did not know what her breed was but was recently allerted to this breed and we believe she is a Kai Ken Mix.

  • Leash Manners - Violet is still learning how to walk on a leash.  There are times when she does very well and other times when she pulls quite a bit.
  • Crate/House Training - Violet is crate trained and house trained.  We have not had any accidents for about a week.
  • Socialization - Violet loves new people and will love on anyone who pets her.  She needs to warm up slowly to other dogs, especially bigger dogs. Once she has warmed up she is not afraid to play rough, so she would likely not do well around old or fragile dogs.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Violet has an incredibly high energy level and needs constant exercise to stay happy. We take her out to play at least 3 or 4 times a day and are also constantly playing while inside.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - Violet is currently eating dry pedigree and seems to like it. A daily schedule consists of lots of playing and running and plenty of kisses to go around.
  • Confidence Level - Violet is an Alpha dog without a doubt and she has no problem letting others know. While she is polite about it, she will take control if there is not a more dominant person there. While she loves meeting new people, she would prefer to do it in a place she is familiar with. She gets very nervous when she is introduced to a place she does not know, making it hard to do simple things like get her to walk up stairs or obey leash manners.
  • Obedience Training - She knows Sit and Stay.  Violet is pretty good about staying off furniture and is still working on not jumping up to greet people.
  • Behaviors - Violet is having trouble with jumping, but other than that she is doing great.
  • Personality Quirks - Violet is very sweet and sassy. She loves attention and LOVES to play.Sshe is one a special dog who will give you her heart if you give her yours.
  • Ideal Home - An ideal home for violet is a multi dog home where her owner will ensure that they are her pack leader.  She also needs to be with dogs that are about her size, as she may enjoy tormenting smaller dogs and may feel threatened by bigger dogs. She is great with kids and loves to lick them clean.

The Kai Ken is intelligent, agile, alert and brave. They are natural hunters and make good guard dogs, being reserved with strangers but loyal to their families. They are friendly, often good with children and are not usually aggressive towards other dogs. Many love to swim, and have been known to cross rivers and climb trees while chasing their prey.
