Description:

Maxwell was adopted from PRBJ back in 2006. We were recently called by Animal Control to pick up this amazing dog because his owners had given him up. I guess Maxwell had gotten out and had been chasing the neighborhoods outdoor cats. He is a sweet Ibizan Hound mix with a loving personality and must live in a cat-free home!

  • Leash Manners - Max enjoys taking walks. He rarely pulls.
  • Crate/House Training - Max is house trained.
  • Socialization - Max plays well with our year-old dog. They also take walks together. Max enjoys running and playing with other dogs his size when we take him to the dog park in Winter Springs.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Max has a moderate energy level. I take him for a walk in the morning, and again in the afternoon. He also runs around the house with our other dog.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule -  Max currently eats about 1-1/2 cups of dry dog food in the morning and evening. He's rather skinny, so we're giving him a little extra to eat right now.
  • Confidence Level - Max is quite confident, but not overly so. He has taken well to living in our house and has adjusted to our routine.
  • Obedience Training -  Max knows Sit, Paw, and Come.
  • Behaviors - Max will jump up on our couch if we're not in the room, so we keep it blocked off. He does like to sleep on our bed at night, but we're discouraging this now because there's just not enough room! He will chase squirrels during our walks, so I have to keep a tight rein on the leash.
  • Personality Quirks - Max is a real sweetheart. He has a very good temperament, and is very tolerant of our younger dog, who coaxes him to play.
  • Ideal Home - An ideal home for Max would be one where he could be taken on frequent walks, since he enjoys the exercise. He is good with other dogs, but doesn't need another dog for companionship.

Maxwell qualifies for our Senior for Senior program. If adopted by a senior person (55+) then his adoption fee is $100.

According to DogBreedInfo.com, the Ibizan Hounds, sometimes called "Beezers" by their fanciers, are quiet, clean, playful and polite. Good with children, gentle, sensible and sensitive. Protective and somewhat independent. They will hold back watchfully with strangers. Once they decide the stranger means no harm, they will relax very quickly. Be careful with small pets such as rabbits, cats and rodents; the Ibizan Hound is bred to hunt these creatures.  Cats that are raised with the Ibizan Hound will fit in just fine as part of the "family pack," but it will chase and possibly kill a cat it does not know. As in all breeds, the Ibizan Hound should be well socialized with other dogs, other animals, adults, and children. Beezers are pack animals by nature, so introducing a puppy to the household is easy. An Ibizan thinks its humans are their pack, so any addition (human or baby) must be introduced slowly. When introducing an adult dog, be sure to take both dogs together on a pack walk, making both dogs heel on the walk before bringing the new dog home. Ibizans are members of the family. They cannot be kept as kennel dogs. They love their humans, are as clean as a cat, and respect the rules of a household. This breed blushes when they get excited, as does the Pharaoh Hound.  Ibizans like to learn and do so very quickly. They are trainable, but tend to be willful if they sense their owners are meek or passive and get bored easily. Provided they have been properly trained, they can participate in many types of dog sports. These dogs are very sensitive to the voice of their handler and a friendly, calm, but assertive command will always achieve more than a harsh command. This breed tends to have large litters. As with all dogs, be sure you are always your dog's pack leader to avoid any negative unwanted behaviors. Proper human to canine communication is essential.
