About Ms. Piggy the Mama Muppet

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes

Ms. Piggy and her babies were brought to us from another shelter, where their time was up. She is a very sweet and loving dog who had been a great mama to her pups, and is now looking for her forever home.

Foster Update:  Ms. Piggy is a very delightful, energetic dog. She adores to cuddle and has cuddled with me every night when I went to bed.  Wherever you go, she follows.  She has been wonderful with our two labs, who are quite larger than Ms. Piggy.  She LOVES to go outside and run freely.  She is a very curious dog and likes to explore.  My 9 month old brother and Ms. Piggy get along marvelously.  She even gives him kisses!  When we brought her home she was nervous and now within a couple of days she has opened up and relaxed.  She couldn't be more perfect.

Foster Update:  Piggy walks perfectly on a leash, although she does get very excited to go outside so will pull on the leash initially, but a fimr grip on the leash corrects that quickly. She is completely housetrained - no accidents, and we do not crate her. She sleeps in my 11-year-old daughter's room at night.  She loves being outside in the sun and will spend most of her day on the back patio sunning herself. Initially, she was nervous and shaking when we brought her home and seemed afraid of our very high energy black lab, but within 24 hours, that disappeared, and now she loves to play!  Our lab is much larger than Piggy, but Piggy doesn't seem to notice and will walk right under the lab! We also have a 15-year-old dog with arthritis, and Piggy completely respected her, and just kisses her face - like she understands that she is too old to play. Piggy and our lab spend lots of time in our backyard running and playing with each other, although Piggy seems to be equally happy being a couch potato as she is running and playing in the yard. She LOVES to go for walks on the leash, though! She rolls over for belly rubs and gives kisses. She is wonderful with our 11-year-old daughter and follows her everywhere, although she seems completely indifferent to our 9 month old. He tries to crawl after her, and she doesn't even seem to notice that he is there. Piggy knew the Sit command when she came to us, although she followed it only about half the time. She sits every time now, and has now learned the "Gimme your paw" command! We will continue working on more commands. She does not dig in the yard or bark excessively. In fact, she only barks when appropriate (someone at the door for example). Piggy is eating wheat free, corn free, soy free food, as she does have a skin reaction to regular food. Piggy needs companionship - canine or human will work. I do not believe that she would do well in a home as the only dog if she was left alone for long periods of time (while her human was at work for example). I don't believe that she would become destructive, but she would be very lonely. When we are home, she tends to follow us around. If she is not with one of us, she follows our lab everywhere so clearly she does not like being by herself. She will make a wonderful companion for a lucky person!

Like many dogs in the South, Mrs. Piggy is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating him with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

PRBJ treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. Heartworms are transmitted to dogs via mosquitoes. Humans do not contract heartworms. Heartworm positive (HW+ ) dogs are treated with the recommended slow kill method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the worms are caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet. All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the name Basset Hound comes from the French word "bas" meaning low. Some sources suggest the Basset Hound may have originated from genetic dwarf dogs presented in litters of other types of French hunting hounds, however, we do know that it is a rather old breed, descended directly from the Bloodhound. Shakespeare described the Basset Hound with the following poetic image: "Ears which sweep away the morning due." According to research, the true fame of the Basset Hound began in 1863, when it was presented at the Paris Dog Show. Its popularity spread to England where a lively dispute arose between two factions of breeders: Those who wanted to keep the Basset Hound a hunting dog, and those who wanted to transform it into a companion dog. Situated between these two factions were the American breeders who proceeded to develop an extremely pleasing companion dog without sacrificing any of the qualities of the hunter. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Its natural bent is for hunting both in the den and in the open. It is therefore, used for the hunting of fox, hare, opossum, and pheasant. Bassets can hunt in packs or alone. It has an excellent sense of smell, but its reflexes are a bit slow. Their slow pace is convenient for hunters on foot and keeps game from being scared out of reach. The Basset's nose is almost as outstanding as the Bloodhound's. George Washington may have owned Basset Hounds given to him by Lafayette after the American Revolution. The Basset Hound is sweet, gentle, devoted, peaceful and naturally well-behaved. They fit into family life well. Their temperament should always be friendly with never an indication of sharpness or viciousness. They are mild but not timid; very affectionate with its master and friendly with children. It is incapable of biting, but it may be a bit stubborn. They like to do tricks for food. It has a deep musical bark. Housebreaking is difficult, but they do well with gentle patient training and positive reinforcement. With proper training, they are obedient, but when they pick up an interesting smell, it's sometimes hard to get their attention. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
