Description:

Vega was brought to us by a caring police officer who found the dog in need. She is so sweet but definitely a bit scared. Her personality really blossoms when she is around another puppy or playful dog.

Volunteer Update:  Vega spent the last two weeks at the University of Doglando participating in a dog training camp for kids!  What a great experience for her to learn some basic commands and gain socialization skills.  Vega will make a great addition to any family.  She is well on her way with basic training!

Foster Update:  Vega is a great family dog.  She knows how to sit and lay, house broken and is only crated when we are away from the home.  I am unsure if she would be good with cats as she is not good with rabbits.  Fine with other dogs.  Loves to go on walks and play in water.  Awesome with toddlers, my one year old climbs all over her, pulls her tail and takes toys and bones from her with no problems.   She is high energy and loves to play, we are tuning up on how fetch works.   Great in public settings she is becoming protective of our home and will bark if someone comes to the door, she will quiet down when we let her know it is okay.  She needs lots of bones and toys to keep her occupied as she does get bored easily.

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
