Description:

When you saw Melody's photo, you might have thought "Oh, look at that ol' girl. She probably just lays around." You might be surprised to know that she takes several 1-2 mile walks per day and keeps up with a very active 5 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Mel loves her walks; however, she also enjoys her little naps. So, you want a best friend but don't feel you are up to the "puppy energy"; however, you want some "puppy love"? Mel could be the sweetheart you've been looking for.

Mel loves the positive attention she gets from all ages when attending rescue events. She smiles, and wags her body and tail to express her happiness. She'd love a little girl or boy of her own to care for her into her golden years or anyone that would make her part of their family. She loves walks, being with her people, canine and feline foster brothers and sisters.

She is looking for a loving forever family that will shower her with the attention she deserves. She loves affection, belly-rubs, and laying in the sun with her canine foster brothers! She will keep you in sight and follow you to the ends of the earth.

  • Leash Manners - Melody walks well on leash; she does not pull. She wears a nylon collar at all times but walks on leash with the use of a slip collar.
  • Crate/House Training - Melody is crate and house-trained; she is crated when we are at work although I would say she does not require crating. Crating when we are at work is a choice so that the geriatric resident dog is able to choose his own dog bed. Melody can be a cute little dog bed hog! Melody is not crated at night.
  • Socialization - My experience is that she is good with all adults and is good with kids. Melody loves the attention she gets from those of all ages when she is at the Oviedo Adoption Center. The volunteers love Melody! They all want to be her handler for the day! She does seem to get a little bit anxious when there is a lot of high-level activity (barking, etc.) with dogs. She tends to just want to calm the activity by getting in between the dogs(probably from being a mama to multiple litter of puppies). Aggression has never been displayed by Melody since being in my foster home.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Melody's activity level is moderate to low. She gets one or two, daily one to three mile walks and also wanders around out in the yard. Her preference seems to be that when she is finished out in the yard, she just wants to come back in and get cozy on her bed. Until her heartworm status is negative, her activity level is being minimized.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - Her daily routine is that she gets up early, goes outside immediately, then goes for about a mile walk. Melody is fed along with my dogs, goes outside again, and then is crated for 9-10 hours while I'm at work. When I get home, the dogs go outside and are then fed again. Depending on my schedule, they may go for another 1 mile or longer walk. After that, they are pretty much settled in for the rest of the night. Melody is fed 1 1/4 cups of dry food twice per day. She should have plenty of water available. If I allowed it, she could be a 'treat monster'; she loves biscuits!
  • Confidence Level - Melody loves attending events where she is leash walked along with my dog. She is so good and gets a lot of looks and attention from people. Melody can be submissive to people. Melody would rather the human be the alpha than herself.
  • Obedience Training - Melody seems to know most basic commands. There are not a lot of obedience needs for which I've use commands for Melody other than just keeping her mind active. She's very responsive to voice and tone. She sits by her food bowl or treat and waits for me to tell her that it's "Okay" for her to eat.
  • Behaviors - Upon first residing in our foster home, there were a few times when I reached for Melody, although had not even touched her, to prevent her from going outside. She cried loudly and ran away shaking. I got down on her level to reassure her that everything was okay. She has not reacted in that way for many months. She loves a belly-rub and to be scratched behind her ears.
  • Personality Quirks - Melody has a little bit of a snore when she sleeps. Of course, it's cute!
  • Ideal Home - My opinion on a good home for Melody would be one where she gets a couple of walks per day without the expectation of running. A moderate to low energy home is the preferred environment for Meloday.

Like many dogs in the South, Melody is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

PRBJ treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.
