Description:

Kate and her 8 puppies came to us from a shelter where their time was up. We are calling her "Kate Plus Eight" after the TV show.  Kate is very sweet and loving and she is also deaf, so she will need a special adopter willing to learn and use sign language with her. Deaf dogs can absolutely communicate with people as long as you use a language they can understand.

Just days after Kate was brought to the shelter, it became apparent that Kate was very sick. She was rushed to the vet where X-rays revealed fluid in her lungs and around her heart, in addition to heartworms. As if that weren't bad enough, she also has pyometra, an infection of the uterus, that requires surgery. At only 3 weeks old, her puppies had to be weaned as Kate was just too sick to care for them.  After 2 days at the vet's office, Kate went home with a wonderful foster who is able to monitor her around the clock.  After diagnosis and treatment of Mastitis as well as kennel cough, Kate has made a LOT of progress!  She's gained weight and seems much happier these days.

Foster Update:  Surgery has been done, weight has been gained, and now Kate just needs to find her forever home!!! And I am telling you what, the person that makes Kate a part of their family will be so very glad that they did!! Now that she is healthy, her true personality is coming out - and it is a great one!! She is a laid back kind of girl but does get very excited when it is time to go on a walk or a car ride! Since she is feeling better, we have started working on teaching her more signs than just "come" and "no!" She seems to be a quick learner... as long as she wants to participate!! Did I mention she has a bit of a stubborn streak?!! (I have been told this is common with deaf dogs!) Kate is great with kids and likes other dogs too. In fact, she would probably do better in a house with another dog as she seems to follow our dog's lead. Kate is an angel in the house. She is totally housebroken and does not jump on furniture. (She would love to if you invited her to though!) I really cannot say enough nice things about this girl. She has a very special place in my heart and I am sure she would find one in yours too if you gave her the chance!!

Like many dogs in the South, Kate is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. We have had many heartworm positive dogs test negative using this method.

PRBJ treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet. All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, early Bulldogs were used in the bloody sport of bull bating. Some of these dogs emigrated with their masters from England to America. Eventually the English Bulldog was bred down in size and his personality was softened, but the American version remained a larger, fiercer dog. The American version has longer legs and more speed and agility than its English cousin. After returning from World War II, John Johnson of Summerville, Georgia was shocked to find out that the breed was nearly extinct, and set out on a mission to revive the breed. Thanks to his efforts, they have made a remarkable comeback. The American Bulldog has also been used as a guard and in hunting bear, wild boar, squirrel and raccoon. They have even been trained to drive cattle and guard stock from predators. Farmers prize these dogs for their stamina, protectiveness, intelligence and working abilities. Some of the American Bulldogs talents are hunting, watchdogging, tracking, weight pulling, and guarding. An American Bulldog should never be confused with uniquely different breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier. The American Bulldog is brave and determined but not hostile. Alert and self-confident, this breed genuinely loves children. It is known for its acts of heroism towards its master. These dogs have fought wild dogs, bulls and even fire. It is said "fighting off one of these dogs is like fighting an animal that possesses an alligator's head and a python's body." Yet when called off by their handler, they immediately obey. No wonder they are said to have "true grit, true devotion and true love." Because of its strong protective instincts, the American Bulldog should be well-socialized and obedience trained at an early age. Some may be aggressive with other dogs and reserved with strangers. They need to be around people to be truly happy. This breed tends to drool and slobber. They have a life expectancy of up to 16 years.
