Hero/Moose is now a TRAINING CAMP GRADUATE!! He even got TOP DOG award. This AWESOME dog is able to complete more than 30 commands including turning lights on and off and ringing bells at the door. His trainers said that with constant training and a couple of years to calm down, he would be a perfect service dog because he is so smart and eager to please.
Some notes from his trainers:
A good dog is only as good as the person behind it. In the beginning, focus on consistency for wanted and unwanted behavior
*try and spend 15 minutes a few times a day working with him
*Make a little list of all the commands that are important and run through daily
*use lots of tiny treats or kibble he can eat quickly and focus back on you and excited praises
*take him on lots of walks - it teaches him you’re leader and he follows, which helps build a bond
*Show him love and affection but DON'T humanize him because it can cause confusion
*verbal correction “no” or “aught” work great for him
*DON’T continually keep telling him the same command over and over again – this is boring and he will lose interest
Remember you’re the boss (the pack leader) don’t allow him to get lead over you
*He is very interested in lizards, birds, and bugs so while out on walks you will need to be diligent and correct him
*He growls at people he doesn’t know but not aggressively; it is because he is unsure. Once you make the introduction, he will lick their hand and look for belly rubs.
*Give him a chance and it is guaranteed you will fall in love with him
Lovable Hero's ideal forever home needs a fenced yard and owners who understand lab and terrier breeds are active and will take him on adventures. A runner or jogger would be great. Teenagers or another dog his size and strength would be a bonus!
Hero is large and stong but very loving however it is recommended that he does not go into a home with small children.
About Training Camp:
Pet Rescue By Judy has teamed up with an incredible program called the Greyhound Advancement Center which allows dogs to attend a ten-week prison training program. The program originally started to help retired racing greyhounds learn how to “dog”.
Greyhound racing is now illegal in our state, but the program worked so well that they decided to open up to other rescues and accept different breeds. Each dog is teamed up with an inmate who is in their dog training program. This program allows inmates to gain an important skill that they can bring with them when they are released. The head trainers are the best of the best and we are sure that these dogs are going to come out of this program with all kinds of tricks up their little doggy sleeves. (Don’t worry, the dogs are treated very well and are the apple of their trainer’s eye ).
Our dogs are so blessed to be able to learn important obedience training to help with their confidence and make them awesome additions to a family.
We can not thank Greyhound Advancement Center enough for giving these dogs a leg up on getting into their forever home!
