Description: Meet Murphy, the minature Golden Retriever. For several days I kept hearing about this new dog we had rescued: "It looks just like a Golden Retriever but it's only about 15 pounds!" No one could tell venture a guess as to its breed, so I did a little research. I think Murphy is what is called a Comfort Retriever. The Comfort Retriever is a designer breed that has been developed for those who want a Golden Retriever in a more comfortable size, hence the name Comfort. They are bred from small Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels. Ta dah! A minature Golden Retriever!!! Murphy is a real sweetheart. He is very loving, not hyper active, just a doll. Trust me, when you meet him you will fall in love! He is a bit of a digger and escape artist. A dog trainer would tell you that dogs escape in search of a stronger pack, so you need to make sure they know you are in charge. They dig because they are bored, so you need to make your yard interesting. Hide things in the yard for them to find ~ dog biscuits, baby carrots, broccoli florets. Check out his videos below.
12/10 Foster Update: "I have little Murphy. He is seriously the CUTEST little dog ever. Strangest mix...he does look just like a mini golden, but no way he has cocker or golden in him. He's smaller than a cocker even. That is definitely the best way to describe him on the web though for sure. He's so tiny though. He's like a long-haired chihuahua or papillion and a small corgi (he has the "saddle" in his fur) maybe?
And a total lap dog. I had a corgi growing up, and he has the same personality as one. Loves to follow and herd. And then sit in your lap and give kisses. Major licker. He's licking me right now... He does very well with kids too, according to Amanda.
When I picked him up at the kennel, was told that he had some "housetraining" issues at his last foster home. I haven't had any "housetraining" issues. He's let out frequently in the yard, and he knows that that is where he is supposed to go. He does mark a lot while out there, so I'm guessing that he was just marking inside of the house like lots of little male dogs do. He was recently neutered too, so that might be why he likes to mark so much still. But, he hasn;t done that at all in my house.
He's a snuggler. He likes to sleep in bed curled up with you. If I turn my back, he will actually get up and come to the other side of the bed so that he can be in my arms. He's like a real-life teddy bear! If you plan on keeping him on a dog bed, he might not understand that concept. He would be a great dog for an older child to sleep with at night.
He's really terrific with other dogs, and we're still working on the cats. Cats both scare him and mystify him. When he sees them he chases them and then stares at them barking. If they confront him though, he jets! He's the same size as the cats though, so I don't know what he thinks he could possibly do. I know that it is something that they will work out, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
I already asked my dad if 3 dogs would officially turn me into a "crazy dog lady" and he assured me that it would :) But, really, Murphy is just that cute and sweet!"
