Eddie was rescued from a high kill shelter. This beautiful hound is full of love and energy!  Eddie was adopted at 4 months and was returned at 7 months because the family didn’t take time to continue training him or exercise him.  He is very friendly with people and dogs and seems to want to please.  We would like to find a home for him with someone who is home a lot or has a friendly dog and has a yard.
  • Leash Manners - Walks well on leash with a prong collar and enjoys riding in a car.
  • Crate/House Training -  Crate/House trained (no accidents). He is more comfortable in the crate when someone is in the room with him.  I’m helping him be more comfortable in the crate by treating him every time I put him in the crate for a nap and at night and he only whines a couple of times.  He plays hard and sleeps well in his crate at night.
  • Socialization – Eddie is friendly with everyone he meets and loves being petted. He enjoys running in the yard with our dogs and was friendly to dogs of all sizes and people at the dog park.  He was friendly with my neighbor and her dog when they came to visit.  He enjoys tossing toys around, puppy wrestling and being near my dogs inside.
  • Energy Level and Exercise – Moderate energy – Eddie enjoys the freedom of the yard and motivates my dogs to chase and play with him.  He gets excited when he sees the leash and loves walks, car rides and the dog park.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule – We walk 1 mile at 6:15 am, he plays outside with our dogs and then has 1 1/2 cups of food.   He tosses toys around inside and plays tug with another dog.  He naps for 2 -3 hours in the crate.  He has 1 1/2 cups of food around 6 PM and then plays in the yard, goes for a walk or to the dog park.  He gets a treat and goes in the crate at 9 – 9:30 pm.
  • Confidence Level – He is a very sweet dog and is fairly confident with people and other dogs.   He is still puppyish and expects to be treated well – no fear.
  • Obedience Training – He knows “sit” and will sit for a treat or his meal.  He knows “come” and we're working on “wait” at the door.   He makes great eye contact and seems to want to please, so he should be easy to train.
  • Behaviors – He is respectful to large and small dogs.  He plays well with dogs and enjoys mouthing/puppy wrestling with young dogs when they initiate it.  He seems to want to be near a dog or person.  He lays by my feet at times and loves it when I let him on the chair to sit with me.
  • Personality Quirks –  He may have a little separation anxiety and would be happiest in a home with another friendly dog or someone who is home a lot.
  • Ideal Home - Eddie would love a home with a single person, a couple or a family with children over 6 since he's still teething.  He would enjoy having another dog to play with or a companion who is home a lot.  He is active so he would enjoy a fenced yard and will be calmer inside for someone who can take him for a long walk or jog daily.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
