NEW !!!!    Foster Update 11/10/10 -  Mary has learned to immediately sit when we come through the door for petting and loving. When she is excited she prances around the house like a Tennessee Walking horse. She has white paws which make her look like she is wearing socks, and when she prances these white paws make her look so cute. She comes up to you and sits and then lifts one paw like she wants to shake hands. It is adorable.

We feed her a cup of food every morning and every evening. When we get the food out, she goes straight to her crate and waits. Then we put the food bowl in and she waits until we throw our hands in the air and say OK. That way she will have a visual as well as an auditory clue that it is OK to eat. We do the same when we are taking her for a walk or when we let her come inside. She has to wait by the door, sit and wait for us to say OK. She is doing this all very well and without treats now. It seems some of her earlier stubborness has disappeared.

Mary LOVES her rawhide chew bones. We give them to her when she goes in her crate. She loves to go in her crate and chew on these. I have not noticed any more anxiety when left alone. We do crate her though when left alone. She has not chewed anything in our house. She grabbed a stuffed animal off our son's bed one day, brought it out to the living room and laid it on the rug and snuggled with it. She is great with our 2 children. She sleeps with one of them but she also sleeps in her crate equally as well. Mary is a FANTASTIC dog and would make a great family pet. Won't you please consider adopting this sweet little girl?

Foster Update - 10/7/10 - Mary is a wonderful dog! We have taken her for a bike ride and she did really well. We were also able to get her to climb into the canoe. She LOVES walks. Most of the time she is calm and likes to chill out. When we come home, she greets us happily at the door. She is fairly well trained and will do what you tell her to do when she is offered a treat or a bone. Mary has her funny moments too. We were watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. The show had a video of some puppies yipping and running around. Mary, facing the other way, turned her head when she heard that and cocked it to one side. It was hilarious! We also tweet about Mary, so if you are interested, you can follow her by searching for helpapaw.

Foster Update 9/13/10: Mary Magdalene closely resembles a Boxer . Her exercise needs can be met with approx a 30 min. walk everyday. She loves people and is friendly with other dogs. Mary has also been very good around children. She loves to be petted and will lean against you so you can scratch her back. She is also very happy to share your bed. Mary is house broken, isn't food aggressive and hardly barks. In the car, she is quiet and will snuggle with the person she is sitting next to. She has a short coat that barely sheds and is really easy to bathe. Mary is a larger breed and is strong. She will need a firm owner to keep her from pulling or lightly jumping up in a friendly way. She is constantly learning commands, but can be stubborn and not follow them. (A treat will fix this.) Mary Magdalene is a great dog and would make a wonderful addition to a family with dog experience.

Here are some highlights from Mags' cute personality:
• Playful and friendly with all other dogs she has met
• Energetic around other dogs but calms down when lounging at home
• Calm demeanor
• Barely ANY shedding at all!! (huge deal!)
• Friendly with all the people coming in and out of my house
• May chew if left home alone and uncrated
• We don't feed her any people food, so rarely any begging at all
• Walks well on leash (twice a day for at least 30 min) but needs guidance and a slightly strong hand
• Mainly likes to lounge and sleep if not walking or playing with doggie visitors

Mary came to us so pregnant she looked looked like she would pop!  She was found as a stray by a high kill shelter and her time was up so Judy stepped in and rescued her.  She had many puppies and was a wonderful mommy to all of them.

Foster Update: Mary has been such a great foster dog! Her favorite thing to do is play with other dogs. She loves all other dogs she meets and always wants to play. When we are all at home, she just sleeps on her comfy chair. Pretty calm when it is not play time! Mary is very easy going and happy to go anywhere with you, very friendly with everyone she has met. There isn't a mean bone in her! Even stray cats will come up to her while we walk and Mary let's them in her face (of course once they walk away she wants to play more!).

She doesn't like to be left home alone so I make sure she is in her crate to avoid any chewing issues! After about a week she got 100% used to her crate and now every morning she runs into her crate with a treat before I go to work.  We have a great backyard she loves to play in but mainly does her "business" on our morning and evening walks. No accidents in the house at all.  She has been going to obedience class and it has been going great. She is a little stubborn at times but learns the commands and completes them about 90% of the time you ask her to. There are all kinds of dogs in the class and she loves them all, even the little puppy who climbs all over her.  Mary would be happiest in a home with another doggie playmate. I say this about most dog-friendly dogs.

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
