Eliah is a black Great Dane puppy with white paws. He is one of a litter of puppies we rescued from the Seminole County Animal Control. Imagine our suprise when we received a call from the administrator, Mary Beth, asking if we could take in a litter of Great Danes! Their Great Dane momma had been adopted but they were left behind. They had developed a cold and she was concerned about them. It is our pleasure to take them and nurse them back to health. We expect that they will be fixed and ready for their forever home by mid-February. Before you decide that one of these pups would be the perfect dog for you, please realize that having one Great Dane incurrs the expenses of having two "regular" dogs. Even though they might be mixed with another breed, you should plan on them being the size of a full-blooded Great Dane. You have to give them double doses of heartworm prevention, double doses of flea prevention, food, well, just cut the bad open and let 'em at it! Ok, they don't really eat a whole bag of food at a time, but you get the idea. Do your breed research and make sure you can afford a Great Dane before you submit an adoption application. You'll be glad you did!

This litter of puppes will hopefully be fixed and ready for their forever homes by mid-February. We will switch their status to Available for Adoption one week before their scheduled surgery. At that point, if you are interested in adding one to your family, you may submit an application. Please do not do so prior to their availablitly ~ we do not adopt on a first come, first serve basis, but strictly on finding the right home for the right pet.

The Great Dane is known as the "Apollo of all dogs." In 407 A.D. German Gaul and part of Italy and Spain were invaded by an Asiatic people (the Alans) who brought with them powerful mastiff-like dogs. In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired, a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds, and the issue was the beautiful, large, thin, agile dog known today as the Great Dane. Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, these dogs have nothing to do with Denmark. The Great Dane is a gentle giant. Dignified, kind, sweet and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. It loves everyone and needs to be around people. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. A steady dog, responsible and dependable. Brave and loyal, it is a good watchdog. They need plenty of exercise - at least a good walk a day. The expected life-span is about 10 years, although some live 12-13.
