About Wade the Lover Dog

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes

Wade was adopted from us almost a year ago. Unfortunately his owner had a medical issue and was not able to care for this sweet Bull-Lab. He is now a big happy boy at 60lbs. He seems to love all people, kids and dogs!

  • Leash Manners - Wade does pull while on leash and needs training with this.
  • Crate/House Training - Fully house trained and crate trained.  Does very well in his crate.
  • Socialization - He is good with people and has been around a few kids and has done well with them.  We have cats, who are scared of him and stayed away at first.  But as they have been venturing out, Wade shows interest, watches them closely.  If they make a sudden move, he gives chase.  He hasn’t bitten them and I don’t think he would because he seems to be just playing.  Of course it terrorizes the cats and they hide again.  He has been to Paw Park and to our neighbor’s house who has two dogs.  He has done well with dogs.  One time he nipped at a strange dog at Paw Park who was annoying and bothering him, but other than that does fine.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Moderate energy level and likes to go for runs.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - He goes out to potty first thing in morning, has breakfast, hangs around with us in the family room as we homeschool, mid-morning walk, late afternoon walk, gets crated if we go somewhere, sleeps in my daughter’s bed with her.
  • Temperament - Wade has always been very sweet with us and somewhat submissive.  He has growled a few times when my daughter looks between his pads for ticks or something like that that he doesn’t like.  He has a sweet nature, but he does need a strong and confident owner to be in control of his temperament.
  • Obedience Training -  He knows Sit and he is getting better with stay.  When he first came home, he would jump up when we had his food bowl.  He’s been trained to sit and stay until he is told okay to eat.  I think he would do well in training classes.
  • Behaviors - He jumps on me when I first come in…. he is easily excitable.  Loves to chase squirrels in the back yard.  Unfortunately, also chases the cats if they move suddenly.
  • Personality Quirks - He really is a lover boy!  He is very loving and sweet natured.  Everybody loves Wade!
  • Ideal Home - Wade would benefit from being able to spend some time in a back yard (we don’t have a fence, so can’t just turn him out).  I can let him out back without a leash and he chases squirrels and lizards and seems to love being out there and comes right back when I call him.  Also, I’m not sure he could be trusted to stay indoors alone as he will get into the garbage and eat anything (he ate an empty toilet paper roll and later threw it up.  We now keep the bathroom door closed!).  He should NEVER be around squeaky toys!!!  Also, we will work more on obedience training.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
