Zara would do best in a home with a single person with a strong pack leader.  We are working on Zara's weight loss and are hoping to find a great home which can help her live out her senior years. Zara  is now also called Sarah and is in a foster home, waiting for her forever home.

Zara was originally rescued from Animal control We decided to rescue her hoping to place her into a home were she fit perfectly! Unfortunately, we found a fmaily but after a few years, she  developed some food and toy possesion issues. Due to this she is no longer compatable in a home with young children. Zara's vet placed her on Prednisone to control skin allergies which has caused her appetite to sky rocket and therefore develop undesirable behavior and weight gain. Zara should be on a wheat, corn and soy free diet along with good flea control as she has sensitive skin.

Volunteer Update 2/14: Zara's description says it all. She loves to cuddle and loves to have her belly rub. She'll grunt and snort if you give her a good scratching! She can be quite vocal, but it is usually because she wants a treat or attention. She does need some exercise, though! She is too cute and verypeople friendly!

Foster Update, 9/12/13:

• Appearance: Color: Tan, Weight:50lbs, Presents a very happy demeanor.

• Energy Level: Moderate. Zara sleeps a lot during the day, but when she is awake she is very playful and likes attention.

• Food: Zara eats Purina ONE SMARTBLEND Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food, ¾ cup - 3 times a day.  Zara appears to have seasonal allergies and will get itchy skin, red eyes and sneezy at times.  These allergies are easily treated with generic brand Benadryl (1 small caplet 15mg twice a day) crushed and sprinkled over her food.

Adaptability: Zara gets anxious on new environments and likes to go everywhere to explore it, once she is off a leash.  She may experience have rapid breathing/panting and not eat until she calms down.

• Behaviors:   Zara seems to experience a little separation anxiety.  Probably, she is not sure if she will see you again once you leave and is very happy to see you come back.  Zara likes to steal empty bottles out of the recycle bin and may steal napkins, or paper towels, from the trash to eat them.  These must be kept in taller containers and out of reach from her.

• Human Social Skills:  Zara is very friendly and loves to play.  .  If her human playing companion(s) are not around, she will not bother anyone else and just go to sleep.    She barks at the garbage truck, school buses, and any large delivery truck that drives by the house.  She also lets you know if someone is at the door, but stops barking as soon as they step inside the house.

• Animal Social Skills: She sits to stare at unknown dogs wanting to make friends and will not bark at them.  When coming close to other dogs, she allows them to greet her and quickly made friends with our neighbors’ Yorkie, Maltese and Golden Retriever right away. Loves to play with the Golden Retriever, like touch-and-go. They both look like puppies playing - it’s a very cute sight.

• Obedience: Zara know some tricks like: sit, down, roll-over, shake and would gladly do them for a treat.

• Training: She is housetrained.

• Personality Quirks:. Zara is a very happy dog.   The first two weeks at my house was very shy and would not beg for food.  She just would sit and stare while you ate, but now she will give a couple of barks when someone is eating and just lays down to sleep on the floor when ignored.  Zara likes attention and likes to cuddle in the couch while you are watching TV.  She loves belly rubs.  She's on a weight management diet due to the extra weight, but the extra pounds don't stop her and can be playful at times. She really likes to play tug of war and even though she would never give up the toy, she wants you to pretend to try.  When ignored, she will follow you around the house with the toy in her mouth. As soon as there is a new guest in the house, she gets her toy to invite this new person to play with her.

• Ideal Home.  Zara likes to play with stuffed animals and would steal them from small children if she sees the opportunity. She is kind of heavy and loves to climb on your lap, with those who play with her and she knows you for a while.   Therefore, she would do best in a household with larger kids (like teenagers).  She is very happy (with a little begging cry) when we come back home after leave her alone in the house.  This appears to be from separation anxiety, and may do best in a household with someone that stays home or that there is someone at home most of the time.

Foster Update, 5/7/13: She is housebroken and know some tricks (sit, down, roll-over, shake.) Zara does not beg for food at all; she will sit quietly and patiently hoping to get fed while you are eating or while getting her food. Also, likes to make friends with my neighbors' dogs. Zara likes attention and likes to cuddle in the couch while you are watching TV.She's still on a diet to lose the extra weight, but the extra pounds don't stop her and can be playful at times. She really likes to play tug of war and even though she would never give up the toy, she wants you to pretend to try. When ignored, she will follow you around the house with the toy in her mouth.

According to www.puggle.org, the Puggle is a small mixed breed of dog created by mating a pug and beagle, thereby producing an energetic hound having a thickset body, a short-haired, smooth coat of fawn, tan, and black coloring, a deeply wrinkled forehead, short legs, a curled tail, and drooping ears. Their coat consists of short hairs. Puggles come in a wide range of colors. Fawn/Tan puggles are the most common, but some are black, white, or tri-colored. Second generation puggles take on more of the white and tan or black, tan, and white coloring. Puggles are sweet-tempered, playful, energetic, intelligent, social, and affectionate. A puggle is a great companion. They are also very curious dogs. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other household pets. Puggles are very friendly and like to show you. They have a good amount of energy and love to play. They enjoy going on walks and running around. Puggles also love their downtime. They love to cuddle up to you on the couch or in bed.
